Waterfowl Impoundment

We took an area that was an old crop field in the edge of a wetland and created a waterfowl impoundment that could be manipulated to hold water at the right time of year.

  • We crafted levies complete with a water control structure to allow the gradual flooding of the impoundment.

  • We amended the soils and created swales that allowed the water to be deeper later in the duck season.

  • The impoundment can be planted in corn, millet, or other grasses for food for waterfowl.

  • We also planted several rapid mast oaks on raised areas in the impoundment that will not be under water when the impoundment is at full capacity.  This area will provide food for the wood ducks in the early season and allow a loafing area for the mallards once winter pushes in.

  • We also designed the impoundment to utilize existing standing timber on the edges so that the ducks will utilize a “green tree” type habitat for the invertebrates and forage it will produce.
